Engine Development
Performance starts with the powertrain.
We develop engines and powertrains for motorsport, small-series, and road vehicles.
From the concept phase through to validation, powertrain systems are created that combine performance, efficiency, and durability.
Simulation, design, and testing are closely integrated – with a clear objective: a powertrain system that unites performance, efficiency, and durability.
Designed for heavy-duty use.
Development across the entire powertrain
The engine, transmission, and peripheral components are developed and tuned as an integrated system.
Wide range of drives
Development of conventional, hybrid, and electric powertrain systems, as well as custom solutions.
Validation under real-world conditions
Testing is conducted on a test bench, in a vehicle, and in racing conditions.
01 — Development of the Propulsion System
Design and implementation of the powertrain system.
At HWA, engine development is driven by the goal of not only delivering performance in the short term, but also ensuring it is consistently available over the long term. Load, temperature, and drivability shape the development of every powertrain, from the initial concept through to final tuning.
New developments, enhancements, and custom powertrain concepts are created with a focus on technical precision, direct power delivery, and high durability across the entire operating range.
Key Areas:
Development of new engines and transmissions
Modification of existing powertrains
Development of complete powertrain systems
Implementation of customer-specific special projects

02 — Simulation and Design
Ensuring performance and durability.
Performance is not achieved solely on the test bench, but begins with the design of the powertrain. Flow, thermal conditions, and mechanical stresses are analyzed early on to achieve a targeted balance between performance, efficiency, and durability.
Simulation supports the development of all relevant systems—from intake and cooling to powertrain and thermal stability under high loads.
Methods:
1D charge exchange simulation for the design of intake and exhaust systems
3D flow simulation for the analysis of pressure loss and thermal stress
Multibody simulation for the optimization of valve train, crankshaft train, and powertrain
Analytical design of cooling and injection systems
03 — Testing and Validation
Validation and operation of the powertrain system.
Performance becomes evident where load must be reliably sustained over time. Test benches, vehicles, and racing operations provide direct insights for calibration, durability, and further development of the entire powertrain system.
Application, endurance testing, and technical analyses accompany development through to final calibration – with a focus on precise drivability, technical stability, and consistently deliverable performance.
Scope:
- Application of engine and transmission control units up to homologation
- Endurance runs and race simulations under varying conditions
- Vibration analysis and data-driven optimization
- Use of drivetrain and engine test benches
- Development of electric and hybrid systems with battery simulator
- Technical support during testing and racing operations
