Affalterbach, 8th January 2020 – Following the successful first season, which included one race win and a further three podium finishes, HWA RACELAB has set its sights on improving in the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship. To achieve this, the team has opted for a trio consisting of one experienced driver and two hugely talented racers with illustrious names: Jake Hughes, Jack Doohan and Enzo Fittipaldi will be at the wheel of the Formula 3 cars from Affalterbach this season.
Jack Doohan is the son of five-time world motorcycle champion, Mick Doohan. Although he has opted for a career on four wheels rather than two, his motorsport talent is unmistakable: in 2015 and 2016, Jack claimed the title in the Australian Kart Championship. As a 15-year-old, he switched from karting to Formula racing, where he continued to win races. He won the Rookie Cup competition in the 2018 British F4 Championship. Last year, he was in contention for the title in the F3 Asian Championship, in which he eventually finished runner-up. This year, parallel to his HWA RACELAB commitments, he races in this series again; Doohan returned to winning ways at the season-opener in Malaysia.
Enzo Fittipaldi also has a world champion in his family tree. His grandfather, Emerson Fittipaldi, was crowned Formula 1 champion in 1972 and 1974. Emerson's grandson has also set his sights on the pinnacle of motor racing. At just 14 years of age, he switched from karting to car racing. As a 15-year-old, he was signed up to the Ferrari Driver Academy following a successful test. Since then, he has developed rapidly. Fittipaldi won seven races on his way to winning the title in the Italian F4 Championship in 2018. Last year, he finished runner-up in the Formula Regional European Championship.
Jake Hughes started racing in Formula 3 and GP3 series in 2016, since when he has won at least one race every season. The Brit's success in Spielberg in 2019 presented the HWA RACELAB team with its historic maiden victory in Formula 3. Now 25 years old, Hughes used his experience to claim a further three podium finishes over the course of the season.
This year's FIA Formula 3 Championship comprises nine events, with a total of 18 races, and starts on 20th March in Sakhir/Bahrain.
Jack Doohan (16, Australia)
"I am pleased to be part of the HWA RACELAB team in the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship and can hardly wait for the start of the season. HWA is known for its competitiveness and I am confident that will be the case again this year. The last two years of racing have given me a good basis. I now hope I can challenge for the title with a top team like HWA RACELAB."
Enzo Fittipaldi (18, Brazil)
„I really can’t wait to join this super competitive and challenging FIA F3 Championship. I am also really excited to join this new adventure with HWA RACELAB. Thanks also to the Ferrari Driver Academy and my sponsors for their continued support.”
Jake Hughes (25, Great Britain)
"I am pleased to be driving for HWA RACELAB in Formula 3 again. I want to use my wealth of experience to help the team this season. I am sure we will find it easier in our second year. As I have stressed many times in the past, it is a great privilege to be part of the HWA company. Throughout my career, I have always developed. I still see sufficient potential for that in Formula 3. The goal is clear: To take my career and the team to the next level.”
Ulrich Fritz, CEO HWA AG
"After our promising first season last year, we are now looking to use the experience gained to improve again and consistently have more than one driver challenging for the podium this season. I am delighted that we have managed to secure the services of Jack and Enzo. However, we did not opt for them because of their famous names, but because of their immense talent, which they have both demonstrated emphatically in recent years. The FIA Formula 3 Championship is the next level for them both. In Jake, they have the right teacher at their side, from whom they can learn an awful lot."
