HWA RACELAB SET FOR FORMULA 3 DEBUT IN BARCELONA
  • First of eight race weekends in the new FIA Formula 3 Championship
  • Promising test results for drivers Viscaal, Hughes and Andres
  • Ulrich Fritz: "The whole team is highly motivated!"

Affalterbach, 9th May 2019 – This weekend, the waiting will finally be over: HWA AG will contest a Formula 3 race with the HWA RACELAB team for the first time, marking the start of a new chapter in the company's long and successful motorsport history.

HWA RACELAB is one of ten teams in the new FIA Formula 3 Championship and lines up with drivers Bent Viscaal (19, Netherlands), Jake Hughes (24, Great Britain) and Keyvan Andres (19, Iran). All three have shown how talented they are with victories in various renowned junior series.

The FIA Formula 3 Championship forms part of the FIA Formula Pyramid, which offers talented young drivers a route into a career in motorsport, ideally taking them as far as Formula 1. One of the ways in which this overarching approach is apparent is the new standard Formula 3 car, which features elements from the top tier of the pyramid (e.g. DRS and the Halo cockpit protection).

HWA attended three official tests in the run-up to the season-opener - with promising results. Jake ended three individual sessions in the top five. The trio produced a fine all-round team effort at the final test in Budapest, finishing fifth (Jake), ninth (Bent) and 13th (Keyvan) fastest.

The season consists of 16 races held over eight weekends, each on the support programme for the Formula 1 World Championship. The races are held over 22 laps or a duration of 40 minutes.

Ulrich Fritz, CEO HWA AG:
"This weekend, the lights finally go out in the FIA Formula 3 Championship! After Formula E, Formula 2 and the DTM, this means that all the series, in which HWA is active as an independent team or partner, are now underway. It is going to be an exciting weekend. Promoting young drivers has always been important to us - and this year, we actually line up with our own team in Formula 3. Talented youngsters are gradually and systematically nurtured here, and we are using all our know-how to help them. The official tests have been very promising and the guys have shown their potential. The whole team is highly motivated! We are now looking forward to pushing hard together on the track."
