Macau - Alex Lynn (Great Britain, 20, Theodore Racing by Prema) won the 60th Macau Grand Prix on Sunday. And so this year, drivers running the Mercedes-Benz Formula 3 engine have secured victories in the three most important Formula 3 events of the season: the Formula 3 Grand Prix in Macau, the Formula 3 Masters at Zandvoort and the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. Antonio Felix da Costa (Portugal, 22, Carlin) Luis Derani (Brazil, 20, Fortec Motorsports) finished the race in second and third place respectively. Lynn finished in third place overall, having achieved three wins and 14 podiums in this year's FIA Formula 3 European Championship. He finished the Formula 3 Masters race at Zandvoort as runner-up behind Felix Rosenqvist, powered by the Mercedes-Benz Formula 3 M271 engine that produces over 200 bhp.
The Macau GP is one of the most prestigious races of the year. The event has been staged since 1954 on the Guia street circuit and has been subject to Formula 3 regulations since 1983. Former winners of the Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix include: F1 legend Ayrton Senna (1983), Formula 1 record-breaking world champion Michael Schumacher (1990) and ex-Mercedes-Benz DTM drivers David Coulthard (1991) and Ralf Schumacher (1995).
This year, a driver has driven to victory for the fifth time on the streets of Macau, utilising the Mercedes-Benz Formula 3 engine. Between 2004 and 2006, Alexandre Prémat, Lucas di Grassi and Mike Conway won the race with Mercedes power, and current Mercedes-Benz DTM driver Daniel Juncadella emerged victorious in the 2011 season. Twelve of the 22 drivers contesting the 2013 Formula 1 season ran Mercedes-Benz engines during their time in Formula 3, including: Formula 1 world champion and MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS driver Lewis Hamilton, four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel and 2010 DTM champion Paul Di Resta .
"This victory in one of the best-known Formula 3 races of the year means a lot to me. The Guia Circuit is one of the most challenging street circuits in the world and demands the drivers' full concentration, since even the slightest mistake can cost victory and the race. So, winning this particular season highlight makes me extremely proud."
Toto Wolff, Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport:
"Congratulations to Alex Lynn! This success in the prestigious Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix is a great way to end the year for Alex. Felix Rosenqvist achieved victory in the Formula 3 Masters at Zandvoort and Raffaele Marciello won the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, so Mercedes-Benz can look back on a successful Formula 3 season with their young drivers. Such achievements should serve to encourage and motivate our young drivers even further. Where that might lead is eminently apparent in the DTM with our Mercedes juniors, who demonstrated their suitability for higher things by securing good results in Formula 3."
