The AMG Mercedes C Class 2008

The AMG Mercedes C Class for the 2008 DTM series is based on the Mercedes Benz C Class. The technicians and engineers working with technical director Gerhard Ungar (43) at HWA AG have had two years to turn the new C Class Mercedes for the road into an equally promising race car. HWA AG was spun off after Daimler AG acquired a majority shareholding in AMG in January 1999. This is where the Mercedes Benz race cars used in the DTM series are built. HWA is short for Hans Werner Aufrecht (68); he founded AMG in 1967 and turned it into the most successful team in DTM history. He is now deputy chairman of HWA AG. Hans-Jürgen Mattheis (46), the team manager, runs and coordinates the racing team.

The choice of the right model for the 2007 DTM series was easy to make: at the same time as the new C Class was introduced to the market in 2007, the DTM race version should make its debut. First, the dimensions and shape of the C Class had to be checked to establish whether the development of a competitive DTM race car in accordance with DTM technical regulations was possible. “If the measurements of the production line model are in accordance with the technical regulations, there is nothing to stop us racing it,” explains Gerhard Ungar.

First test in January 2008

Development and construction began in May 2007. An independent project group at HWA AG, working separately from the racing team, carried out the work on the new car. Ten months later the new C Class for the DTM series was out on the circuit for the first time. For the rollout and the first test in Estoril, Portugal, Bernd Schneider and Bruno Spengler were at the wheel, the winner and runner-up in the 2006 DTM series.First a wind tunnel model on a scale of 1:2 was constructed, since a large part of the development work would focus on the aerodynamics. “This is where we have the most work to do when building a new car. Parts such as doors, windscreen and bonnet all have to be newly developed and constructed”, says Ungar.

Main focus of further development: engine and suspension

Underneath the new bodywork, development of individual components continued, with the main focus on engine and suspension. The 90-degree V8 engine with four litres displacement and four valves per cylinder was further improved, especially with respect to handling. Fitted with the two regulation 28 mm diameter air restrictors, the engine delivers some 500 hp at 7,500 rpm and a peak torque of 500 Nm. The performance restriction leads to greater reliability and cost effectiveness, both part of DTM’s philosophy.

The suspension offers the engineers the greatest scope for improvements. “The toe-in and camber curves offer a wide spectrum of possibilities for further refining driving dynamics and handling”, says Gerhard Ungar. The aim is to assemble the best possible technical package, which is effective on all the race tracks. A maximum of two or three parameters in the basic configuration are changed from circuit to circuit to adapt the C Class to local conditions. The drivers, too, focused on handling when putting together their wish lists for the new model. Interestingly, the four pilots racing for HWA AG in 2007 all asked for much the same things.

25 C Class drivers from 13 countries since 1994

Since 1994 two women and 23 men from 13 countries have raced in the DTM or ITC series driving Mercedes Benz C Class, and eleven of them have won races with the car. The two most successful C Class drivers are Bernd Schneider, with a total of 21 wins, and England’s Gary Paffett, with 9 wins and the 2005 championship title.

The drivers for the 2008 season are Bernd Schneider, Paul di Resta, Bruno Spengler and Jamie Green. Schneider (43) has been racing for Mercedes Benz in the DTM since 1991, and in this time he has won 41 races and the championship title in 1995, 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2006. For the French-Canadian Bruno Spengler (24) 2008 will be his fourth season racing in DTM. In 2006, his first season driving for the works team, he won 4 races, and in 2006 and 2007 he finished as runner-up for the championship title.

Green (25) was the 2004 champion of the Formula 3 Euroseries, driving a Dallara Mercedes. He also won the last two races in the 2007 season.

Paul di Resta (21) is in his second season racing for Team AMG-Mercedes and his first racing for HWA; in 2007 he won the rookie championship.
